Rochester’s Global Ties: Local Events Reflect International Connections

Rochester’s vibrant community continues to embrace its global connections through a series of events that highlight international cultures, discussions, and collaborations.

International Plaza: A Cultural Hub

Located at 828 North Clinton Avenue, the International Plaza serves as a colorful Latin-themed event space and marketplace. It offers a variety of vendors, from pop-up tents to permanent locations housed in creatively repurposed shipping containers. The Plaza provides a community gathering space to celebrate and build on the cultural diversity of the surrounding neighborhood and the city. Between May and December, it hosts a wide array of cultural community events, including Sunday Market Day events and Signature Events. Additionally, the Plaza features a variety of prepared food vendors, offering international cuisine from Wednesday through Saturday.

Climate Havens Symposium: Addressing Global Challenges Locally

In April 2026, the University of Rochester hosted a two-day symposium titled “Climate Havens: Humanistic Perspectives on Resilience, Migration, and Resources.” The event examined the concept of “climate havens,” focusing on the Great Lakes region as a site of relative environmental resilience. The symposium brought together historical, philosophical, artistic, literary, and cultural perspectives to explore how havens have been imagined as spaces of collective refuge and communal care. Topics included climate and historical migration, water politics, environmental ethics and justice, narratives of home and displacement, urban planning, and cultural and ecological loss.

Global Entrepreneurship Week: Fostering Innovation

In November 2025, Rochester joined a worldwide movement by hosting Global Entrepreneurship Week Rochester (GEWROC). This four-day celebration aimed to empower entrepreneurs and strengthen the region’s business ecosystem. The event featured more than a dozen partner organizations and over 40 speakers offering workshops, bus tours, wellness events, advisory sessions, and networking opportunities. GEWROC connected Rochester to a global movement celebrating entrepreneurship in more than 200 countries, while keeping the focus local—on neighborhoods, small businesses, and the people turning ideas into impact within the community.

These events underscore Rochester’s commitment to embracing and celebrating its global connections, fostering a community that values cultural diversity, international collaboration, and innovative thinking.
